In 2013, movmi was founded with a simple but ambitious vision: to make shared mobility a core part of how cities move. Eleven years later, that vision has taken us across continents, into dozens of projects, and through countless collaborations with operators, cities, and communities.
Along the way, our team has learned lessons, big and small, about what it takes to create sustainable, people-centred transportation systems.
To mark movmi’s 11-year milestone, we asked our team members to share their biggest insights. Here’s what they had to say:
Listen, Experience, and Learn
Antonio Loro
Associate Urban Planner
“For those of us working to improve urban mobility, it’s important not only to listen to a wide range of users to get their perspectives, but also to directly experience what it’s like to move around the city using different modes, in different areas, at different times.
It might sound odd, but if you’re trying to make it easier and safer to get around on foot or by bike, you can gain unexpected insights about driver behaviour by occasionally sitting behind the wheel. The more perspectives we experience, the better equipped we are to design solutions that truly serve everyone.”

The Sustainability Triangle
Venkatesh Gopal
CEO
“When planning for shared mobility programs, always think of the sustainability triangle: environmental, social, and economic.
It’s not enough to deliver a program that only checks one of these boxes. To thrive in the long run, shared mobility systems must be reliable, resilient, and future-proof—ecosystems that breathe and grow with the city. Whether you’re renewing a city program, expanding your service area, or diversifying your offerings, make sure you’ve considered all three corners of the triangle.”

Letting Go Creates Space
Sandra Phillips
Founder & Chairperson
“Handing over the reins a year ago was a big moment for me. What I’ve realized since is that letting go isn’t about absence—it’s about making space for something new to take root.
Over the past year, movmi has stepped into a new era: launching SMR 360, an online course that opens our expertise to a global audience, and helping bring the Active Transportation Summit to rural Kimberley. These are just the first seedlings of what’s to come—proof that new ideas flourish when space is created for them.”

The Power of Storytelling
Aoife Rafferty
Marketing Manager
“Shared mobility is still a new concept for many people, and facts alone aren’t enough to create change. One of the most powerful tools we have is storytelling. By sharing real experiences—how a student uses e-scooters to get to class, or how a family relies on carshare instead of owning a second car—we make the abstract benefits tangible.
The tip I’d offer is this: don’t just explain what shared mobility is, show who it impacts and how it makes daily life better. When people see themselves reflected in the story, curiosity turns into understanding, and understanding grows into adoption.”

Through workshops, whitepapers, and online courses, movmi has trained over 2,500 professionals in the mobility sector—helping spread stories and knowledge that accelerate adoption. Read more.
Sharing as a Way of Living
Rudy Six
Member of the Board
“I am very excited to see the increased interest in sharing services over the past decade. Whether that is in the accommodation space with AirBnB, in social media with Facebook and Instagram, or in the mobility space with the countless carsharing and micromobility services around the world.
Nowadays, ownership is far less valued than convenience and being able to access the right service, at the right time, where and when needed. Today, we can only start to imagine where this shift in culture and values will take us. The way we will move around our communities and interact with one another will continue to evolve. Shared mobility services like carsharing will become second nature amidst a network of options.”
movmi Impact Highlight
movmi has supported operators in 18 rural communities, proving that shared mobility isn’t just for big cities—it’s also expanding accessibility in smaller and underserved areas. Read more.
The Power of Sharing
Michael Glotz-Richter
Practice Lead
“Sharing is important for sustainable mobility but even more important for living together. Sharing cars, bikes, e-scooters, vans, and mopeds is part of advanced mobility strategies. Sharing toys is something we learn as children to have more fun. Sharing ideas spreads good messages. Sharing love and hope makes our world a better place.
movmi is built on this idea: let’s share the future together, continuing with ambitious work for better communities.”
movmi Impact Highlight
movmi launched the Empower Women in Shared Mobility network, creating the world’s only space dedicated to connecting and supporting women-founded transportation ventures. Read more.
Looking Ahead
Eleven years of movmi has taught us that mobility is never static. Cities evolve, technologies shift, behaviours change—and the future of transportation is shaped by those who are willing to listen, adapt, and share.
As we look toward the next decade, our commitment remains the same: helping cities and operators design shared mobility systems that are sustainable, inclusive, and resilient.
Here’s to the next chapter—and to sharing the journey together.
